There’s an Amazing Botanical Garden and Butterfly House in Cleveland
May 25, 2022
There is an urban oasis hidden in the depths of Cleveland. Located at University Circle, the incredible Cleveland Botanical Garden offers an escape into a rich, verdant and vibrant world. With a huge glass greenhouse and a beautifully maintained exterior, it’s impossible to miss this botanical garden and butterfly greenhouse in Cleveland. That’s right…we mentioned butterflies! Butterflies are one of the main attractions in the garden and they bring joy and excitement to visitors of all ages. Are you ready to spend some time in a butterfly-studded paradise? Let’s continue to Wade Oval, where this incredible Cleveland institution hides a real metropolitan jungle.

The Cleveland Botanical Garden is home to carefully selected plants that thrive inside and outside the greenhouse. In the 10 acres of gardens outside, you can actually spot remnants of Cleveland’s history. When the former Greater Cleveland Garden Center moved to this location, locals were well aware that the site once housed the Cleveland Zoo. Today, the old zoo is a distant memory, but you can still spot its bear pit in the Ohio Woodland Garden.

By the way, the grounds of the Cleveland Botanical Garden are home to an almost unbelievable number of plants and animals. There are over 350 species of plants here, plus around 50 species of animals!

When planning your visit to the Botanical Garden, keep in mind that there is a tonne to have. It closes at 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, so be sure to give yourself plenty of time to explore.

Surrounded by the chirping of birds and the trickling of water, you will feel like you are in the tropics. However, the bustling streets of Cleveland lie just beyond the glass of the greenhouse.

The birdsong you will hear during the tour is not pumped through loudspeakers…it is real, and it is just one of the many species that call this place home. For many, butterflies are the main (and most interactive) attraction.

The butterfly tour is included in your general admission ticket and you can stay and admire the butterflies as long as you wish. Don’t forget that the garden closes early…so be sure to allow plenty of time to bond with them!

Indeed, their avocado trees bear fruit regularly… and so do the coffee trees and other unique species!

Butterflies teach visitors valuable lessons about how deeply interconnected forests are with species like butterflies. The two depend on each other to survive, which opens up opportunities for visitors to learn and be inspired.

Butterflies rub shoulders with a panther chameleon, radiated tortoises, frogs and even Madagascar hissing cockroaches. Of course, they are surrounded by a vibrant interior forest which is also very much alive.

Don’t forget to have your camera handy. You never know when one of these magnificent creatures will land on you!
