SUPERTRAMP - RETROSPECTACLE: THE SUPERTRAMP ANTHOLOGY - UNIVERSAL
Record Rating: *****
Throughout the early seventies, Supertramp had a number of best-selling albums, which culminated into their 1979 masterpiece, Breakfast in America. On the strength of hit singles like The Logical Song, Goodbye Stranger, and Take the Long Way Home, the album sold over 18 million copies worldwide and made Rick Davies and his boys a household name.
There have been several Supertramp "best of" compilations in the recent past, but none have been of this magnitude. This latest compilation Retrospectacle: The Supertramp Anthology covers all of the band's bases and stands head and shoulders above the rest. This well-chosen collection spans three decades, but focuses intently on the five great years that cemented the band's reputation as one of the world's foremost rock acts.
The seventeen song offering predominantly spawns everything from their early rock n' roll (Crime of the Century, Ain't Nobody But Me) to the period when they matured and refined themselves into a well crafted hit machine. Singles like It's Raining Again, The Logical Song and Goodbye Stranger, well-crafted, tightly bound pop songs that skyrocketed to the top of the pop charts during the late '70s and early '80s, are on this compilation as well. That alone will make it worthwhile for a casual listener.
The more hardcore fans will notice some favourite album and fan favourite missing ~ for them there's a thirty two track limited edition two CD set being released of this compilation as well ~ all the Supertramp they could ever need in their collection. Still with this single Disc, you get a great deal. For it's chock block with songs you've probably heard before and might even know the words to, but didn't know it was Supertramp. This one gets two thumbs flying up all the way.
iPod Garage reviews Supertramp Gold: Retrospectacle - The Supertramp Anthology
Being in my mid 30's, I have had the fortunate (some say misfortunate) experience to acquire many, many musical memories associated with times and places I once was. Certain bands, sounds and smells take a person back to that time and place the track was most familiar and fun. Vague memories as a child growing up to rock records and reel to reel mixed party tapes, Supertramp was always on those mixes, and now thanks to the iTMS, one of the best defining single band rock compilations can be on your iPod or in your iTunes music library.
With the majority of the composers being Rick Davies & Roger Hodgson, you can only marvel at the brilliance of structure and sound. All the classics can be found on this collection from School, Bloody Well Right, Dreamer, to Rudy and Give A Little Bit. All of which takes me back to those Sunday Brunch moments. Setting up the kitchen during my Chef Apprenticeship, practicing my air guitar and drums technique all while making twenty liters of hollandaise sauce and smelling nothing but bacon toast (I'm more than sure your scenario is a little different, but none the less, you were drumming, singing, or mimicking a guitar riff).
More than enough fun can be had grooving out to Crime of the Century, From Now On to The Logical Song. With thirty-two tracks in total, the album also comprises several remixes, live or re-edits. Land Ho gets a single version remix that I tend to like a lot more. The percussion seems to be bumped up and the vocals tamed down a bit (pitch wise). Summer Romance was made into a two and a half minute single mix that can only be described as an ass swaying, toe tapping blues power ballad. Another Man's Woman tops out the playlist of bonuses for a live nine and change minute interlude. The double CD pack finishes with Over You and as always, full of brass, harmony and crisp percussion.
Once again Supertramp has been reintroduced back into the kitchen with my return to the hospitality industry and so far has received great reviews as one of greatest rock bands of all time that will no doubt have you shaking your rump tapping your toes and swaying to the keyboards, doing, what ever you are doing.
