BMC will organize a tree-planting campaign to mark ‘Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav’

Following the Center’s announcement of the “Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav” and “Har Ghari Tiranga” campaign across the country to celebrate 75 years of independence, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) also implemented the campaign all over Mumbai.

As part of the campaign, BMC’s Garden department will plant 3,000 trees in its 135 gardens in Mumbai from August 12-15.

Jitendra Pardeshi, Superintendent of the Garden Department, said, “We are taking help from school children and NGOs like Ni-Asharay, Mumbai Green Mission for the tree planting scheme.

Pardeshi further stated, “BMC preferred to plant trees of Indian origin suited to the climate of Mumbai, including Banyan, Bawa, Bakul and Pipal trees.”

Pardeshi said they would avoid planting Gulmohar and foreign trees as these trees can be uprooted and collapse easily. “We have many examples of foreign tree collapse over the last four to five years,” he said, adding that BMC has noticed that Indian birds are not resting or building their nests on foreign trees.

BMC has 24 nurseries in the 24 districts and has 3,000 samples available with them. During planting, BMC will call celebrities who stay around the gardens and plant trees. “We didn’t give them an invitation beforehand if they are available at that time, we will call them.” Said Pardeshi.

Bandra Joggers Park, Model City Garden in Andheri, Madhu Khar Park and Walawalkar Park Andheri are some gardens where these tree plantings will be done from August 13 to 15.
